How we support
About the foundation
For a future free from disease
The Wilhelm Sander Foundation supports excellent and innovative medical research. Our goal is to fund research approaches that contribute to the sustainable improvement of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
Our funding follows the bottom-up principle: the topics are proposed by the scientists themselves, and we create the necessary conditions to enable projects to be carried out quickly and in a goal-oriented manner. Thanks to our efficient review and decision-making processes, we can usually process applications within four months.
The focus of our funding is on projects in Germany and Switzerland. Since the foundation was established, we have approved over €350 million for around 2,700 research projects at universities and non-university research institutions, thereby making a significant contribution to cancer research beyond government funding.
In addition to individual projects, we are also involved in special programs, the promotion of young scientists, and the establishment of specialized therapy units. Our partnership with the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings underscores our commitment to promoting the scientific excellence of tomorrow.

Our funding area at a glance
Funding cancer research is at the heart of the Wilhelm Sander Foundation. For five decades, we have been supporting projects for the research, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, thereby fulfilling our foundation’s purpose of ‘promoting medical research, especially in the fight against cancer’.
We support fundamental research into the development of cancer in the fields of tumour biology, oncogenetics and immunology.
Our funding focuses on tumour-specific studies and the development of innovative therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
A particular focus is placed on researching rare types of tumours. These often provide groundbreaking insights into the immune system and open up new approaches to personalised cancer treatment.
Our goal is to generate new knowledge through targeted research funding that directly benefits patient care.
